Cascades Female Factory, Hobart, Tasmania

Yard 1, Entrance to Female Hell on Earth.



This was 1 of 5 yards that was part of the original Cascades Female Factory in South Hobart.

This proud and pregnant woman is representation of so many female convicts who arrived in Van Diemans Land in the 1800’s. 

Inside the Female Prison


 
This reconstruction of the inside of Yard 1 is what so many of the unfortunate women would have seen as their home at the end of the world. It was a very miserable facility, and often they ended up here through no fault of their own, just their horrible circumstances.
